Abstract The so-called Gas War (2003) could be characterized as a massive human rights viola-tion in Bolivian recent history. Until now this historical episode was addressed only un-der an internal perspective. This article's purpose is to add an international analysis to the known historical narrative. The United States had a major influence in this domestic confrontation. Using historical reports and journal interviews, we want to take a look into the discourse used in the bilateral relationship between Bolivia and the US regar-ding the human rights debate. Our analysis covers the US interference and comprehends the so-called Gas War of 2003 and the civil trial against former President Sánchez de Lozada in Fort Lauderdale in 2018.
