    Resumen

    Introduction: Smoking is a public health problem, killing 6 million people per year; it's prevalence in Bolivia in 2013 was that of 38.6% in men and 11.2% in women. Method and Materials: This is a cross-sectional analytical study using self-administered questionnare on students of 1st and 5th year of medical school. Results: With 307 students participating, the prevalence of smokers in the last month was 24% with an average age of onset being 17.1 years; half of smokers have attempted to quit and consider quitting. 19.5% of smokers have smoked at least once on campus. Students in 5th year have a 2.1 ORP in regards to students of 1st year in this practice. Students categorized as current smokers are against the implementation of politics to control the use of tobacco in the university and politics to implement environments 100% free of smoke with an ORP of 2.4 and 2.9 respectively. Discussion: The prevalence of smoking in medical students is high, although this has decreased since 2007; In the implemenation of environments free of smoke students who are current smokers must play an important role, as well as spreading knowledge of the national laws and university regulations.
