Dermatomyositis is a clinical form of inflammatory disease characterized by proximal and symmetrical muscle weakness, elevated muscle enzymes, and characteristic biopsy findings and electromyographic features of muscle. Its etiology is unknown and possibly different causes and different pathogenic mechanisms are responsible. Their presentation variants are: dermatomyositis, juvenile dermatomiositis, dermatomyositis associated with cancer and overlap syndrome. The treatment includes educating the patient and his family, physical exercise, glucocorticoids and immunosuppressants. The sooner treatment starts the better the result. If the answer refractory to drug classic treatment, they have developed other forms of therapy, these are intravenous gammaglobulin, inhibitors of Tumor Necrosis Factor alpha, thymectomy and extracorporeal photochemotherapy.
